• The Stan O’Bannon Watercolor Art Show opens Aug. 1 and remains open until Aug. 29 at the Arts Center in Hartwell on E. Howell Street. O’Bannon’s art is influenced by the local countryside. Call the Arts Center at 706-377-2040 for more information.

• The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) will be staged Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Electric City Playhouse in Anderson. Tickets are $15. Call 864-224-4248 for details or ticket information.

• Habersham Community Theatre will mark the end of its season with Sylvia, a modern adult romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog. The play is staged Aug. 1-3 and 7-9. The Theater is on Washington Street in Clarkesville. Call 706-839-1315 for more information.

• A Confederate Encampment takes place Aug. 2-3, at Hart State Park. Watch weaponry, drilling and marching demonstrations, then learn about uniforms, tents and equipment from the Civil War. The encampment is open until 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Parking is $3. Call 706-376-8756 for more information.

• Blue Highway performs at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Walhalla Civic Auditorium. Tickets are $20. Blue Highway is a contemporary bluegrass band with eight albums to their credit. Tickets are available at the Booksmith, Musician’s Den, Sensibly Chic and the Chamber of Commerce in Seneca, as well as Village Framer and Common Grounds in Walhalla.

• The Hart Regional Arts Council annual meeting is 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Arts Center in Hartwell. Special entertainment is provided by the Land of Spirit Players. The public is invited. Call 706-376-4739 for details.

• Gold Fever, a program Aug. 9, 9-11 a.m. at Smithgall Woods Conservation Center, is about the history of local gold mining and the geology of the area. See gold specimens and watch a panning demonstration. Register in advance. Parking is $3. Call 706-878-3087.

• The Trivia Challenge to benefit the Arts Center is 7-10 p.m. Aug. 12 in Hartwell. The annual challenge involves teams of three or four members vying for victory in 20 or more rounds of Trivial Pursuit. The cost is $120 per team. For more information, call 706-318-1181.

• Youth Fishing Day is observed Aug. 16, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at Smithgall Woods Conservation Area near Helen. Children and their parents or guardians can fish in one of two ponds stocked with catfish, bream and bass. Fish caught can be kept and staff members are available to help. • Tallulah Gorge State Park will have a Full Moon Canoe Outing on Aug. 16, 7:30-10 p.m. Join a ranger-led canoe excursion on Tallulah Lake under a full moon. A limited supply of canoes and life jackets is available. Register in advance by calling 706-754-7981.

• Leadership Clemson’s charity event for the year is Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, modeled after the television show of the same name. Fifth graders from Clemson Elementary School will be the classmates. The contest takes place at Tillman Hall at Clemson University at 6 p.m. Aug. 19. • Planning A Fall Vegetable Garden is Aug. 21 at the South Carolina Botanical Gardens in Clemson. The class will learn how to select vegetables and herbs that do well in autumn and winter. • Peter Rabbit’s Salad Garden is a two-hour course offered at the South Carolina Botanical Garden on the Clemson University campus. This program is designed for an adult and child pair, but individuals are welcome. Specialty lettuces, greens, edible flowers and herbs are part of the curriculum. The fee is $25 per container. The program lasts from 9-11 a.m. at the Nature Learning Center and Sprouting Wings Greenhouse. Call 864-656-3405 for more information.

• The Fantastic Shakers will perform at the Walhalla Civic Auditorium on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. The Fantastic Shakers is a show band that has performed together across the country since 1978. Tickets are available at the Booksmith, Musician’s Den, Sensibly Chic and the Chamber of Commerce in Seneca, as well as Village Framer and Common Grounds in Walhalla.

• The Sound of Music will be staged at the Oconee Community Theatre Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 7-9 and 14-16. The Rogers and Hammerstein production has become the world’s most beloved musical about a widowed naval captain who hires a high-spirited governess to look after his seven children in Nazi-era Austria. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Call 864-882-7700 for more information.
