Great Lake Allatoona Clean Up slated for Sept. 18, volunteers needed
By Pamela A. Keene

The tradition continues. With more than 4,000 volunteers annually and more than 40 tons of trash collected in a single morning, the Lake Allatoona Preservation Authority is hosting its 25th Annual Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup on Saturday, September 18. The group is still seeking volunteers to assist, particularly those with boats who can help move trash and debris to central collection sites.

“Our goal is to collect at least 40 tons of trash this year in as short a time as possible, carrying on the tradition of the Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup,” said Mike Marchbanks, coordinator for this year’s event. “We’re doing the cleanup with a little bit of sparkle and maybe a bang, expanding the volunteer party to include entertainment and other activities.”

Thousands of volunteers from the Lake Allatoona watershed will cover hundreds of miles of Lake Allatoona and Lake Acworth shoreline in this one-day event that celebrates National Public Lands Day.

The cleanup begins at 9 a.m. The party will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in an expanded format that will include a picnic at Riverside Park in Cartersville, along with musical entertainment, including the popular Tom and Dave Show.

Last year more than 4,200 volunteers collected more than 42 tons of trash, debris and tires from more than 250 miles of shoreline in a program that provides environmental stewardship to the area’s lakes.

“Our volunteers consist of Boy and Girl Scouts, lease holders around the lake, private clubs, marinas, boaters, fishermen, environmentalists and families that are vigilant in wanting to improve the water quality and protect the quality of life around Lake Allatoona,” he said.

Lake Allatoona Preservation Authority, which has taken over management of the event in recent years, partners with a number of organizations that include the City of Acworth; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Georgia Department of Natural Resources; Rivers Alive and others.

Online registration will be held through September 10.
