Dixie Highway 90-Mile Yard Sale
By Shari Rathman

Need another rod and reel or some more lures? A kitchen sink? The Dixie Highway 90-Mile Yard Sale might be a good place to find them. The “yard sale” stretches from Ringgold to Marietta. Along the route, there are 13 Dixie Highway communities involved in the event.

The first 90-Mile Yard Sale began in 2006. Kennesaw’s Kenworth Golden K Kiwanis Club member, Joe Bennett, Sr. came up with the idea. Due to its popularity, the two-day event became a three-day yard sale this year.

On Friday, June 6 at 7:45 am, the merchants in Acworth were surprised when they saw a bus pull up from the Roswell/Alpharetta with shoppers. “Early bird catches the worm.” said Sheila Rankin of Adriana’s fine furniture who also did not expect such early birds but she had her items out for sale. “We did excellent. It was a wonderful weekend for us.”

Tony Sanford of Cartersville stated “My passions are bass fishing and hunting.” The weekend of June 6-8 he was not out on the lake fishing but rather at home for the Yard Sale.

“Saturday was really busy. At one time I had 21 people looking at items in my backyard,” he said, adding “15 rods and reels went Friday and Saturday.” He still had a few left on Sunday.  Sanford said “I like to roam around and pick up items with the 90-mile Yard Sale in mind.  Some items I keep for myself and others I sell.” He also had lots of lures and other items available for sale.

In Cartersville, not only did they have participants in the sale but the city also hosted a Classic Car Cruise. Liz Hood, the executive director of Downtown Cartersville Development Center said, “At 4:15 p.m. on Saturday there were 150 classic cars and by 6 p.m., when it was suppose to start, there were 350 cars.” They were very pleased with the turnout. There was a free concert from Still Cruisin’, playing Carolina beach music and shag.  The Georgia Barbeque Classic was going on as well.

Save the first weekend in June next year to travel the 90-mile Dixie Highway Yard Sale.
