City of Buford leases Lanier Harbor property

By Pamela A. Keene
The City of Buford signed a lease with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for management of the former Lanier Harbor Marina property off Buford Dam Road. The lease was finalized about 18 months ago, according to officials at the Corps.
“This is an ‘as is’ lease and as of now the City of Buford has not submitted an updated master plan to further develop the property,” said Tim Rainey, project operations manager with the Buford Dam Project management office. “We are grateful that the city has taken over the park so that it can be used for the public.”
The lease with the city covers the same footprint as the Lanier Harbor Marina lease. “The city has done some initial cleanup and we’re considering options,” said City Manager Bryan Kerlin. “Our primary goal was to preserve the property, and that’s what we’ve done.”
Kerlin said that the city has not set a timeframe or budget for any improvements or changes to the property. “Right now, we’re allowed two day-use docks,” Kerlin said. “We are glad to be able to preserve some of Buford’s history.”
