FLW returns to Lanier in 2018

By Pamela A. Keene

The 2018 FLW comes to Lake Lanier in March drawing national attention to Lanier, Gainesville and Hall County. It is the third of seven major tournaments in the fishing series that offers up to a $125,000 payout per event.

It will take place at Laurel Park March 8-11. Sponsored by the Gainesville Convention and Visitors Bureau the tournament is expected to be a major economic driver for 2018, as much as $2 million including participants and spectator spending.

Two Gainesville professional anglers said they are planning to compete – Jason Meninger, with more than $330,000 in career winnings, and Jason Johnson, who has been on the pro tour for three years and has won more than $110,000. Meninger has fished the FLW for eight years; Johnson has been on the circuit for three years. Both travel the nation to compete.

As the world’s largest fishing tournament organization, the Fishing League Worldwide hosts five tournament circuits and in 2017 awarded millions of dollars in prize money. It produced nearly 260 bass-fishing tournaments in the United States last year; additionally, it sanctions events in Canada, China, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea. It is headquartered in Benton, Ky.
