Houseboat fire quickly contained at Port Royale

By Pamela A. Keene
A houseboat at the dock caught fire in mid-September in Port Royale, but the quick response from the Forsyth County Fire Department helped contain the blaze. No one was injured, but the houseboat and a pontoon boat in the same slip were destroyed. Several nearby vessels experienced heat damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
When the 75-foot 1992 Lazy Days houseboat in an uncovered slip caught fire Saturday, September 16, around 9 a.m. the owner was nearby. He and others on the dock used fire extinguishers and on-dock water hoses until the fire department arrived. By that time, the owner’s pontoon boat in the same slip had also caught fire. Several nearby craft sustained heat damage, as did the dock.
“The Forsyth County Fire Department was on scene very quickly,” said Brent Pearson with Port Royale. “The boat was docked close to shore and the fire department had no trouble getting down to it. They used water from their truck to extinguish the fire. We towed the boat and had it out of the water around lunchtime.”
