Snow sets the scene for successful Boat Parade of Lights

By Pamela A. Keene

A little snow made a perfect setting for this year’s Boat Parade of Lights on Lake Lanier. Weather forecasters predicted a light dusting in and around the lower end of Lake Lanier, but Mother Nature had other plans.

“The snow was the icing on the cake for us this year,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, which sponsors the parade each December to raise money for children’s charities in North Georgia.

“We urged people to be cautious on their docks and boats because of possible ice on Saturday as they decorated and brought their boats to Sunset Cove at Lanier Islands. We had a record number of entries and our winter ‘dusting’ brought us long-awaited winter temperatures.”

The real winners of the day were the youth charities that will benefit from the Boat Parade of Lights – Hall County Sheriff’s Youth Home, Lake Lanier Boys & Girls Clubs, Hall Count Sheriff’s Dive Team and Toys 4 Tots. Their checks will be presented during the first quarter of 2018.

It was also a winning day for Scott and Joanne Tollerson, who won the Grand Prize Raffle and received a brand-new Yamaha Waverunner VX and trailer, made possible by Park Marine.

Marc D’Amico received the “Best Parade Ship” prize for his boat “The Office.” He got into the holiday spirit by dressing as Santa for the event.

Participants in the parade marshaled at their respective marinas late on Saturday afternoon before proceeding to Lanier Islands where the boats were on display for guests and locals. Winners and runners-up were selected at each marina.

Congratulations to the following winners:
