LemonAID at Skogie’s helps families of fallen soldiers on Memorial Day

By Pamela A. Keene
It's a win-win for everyone involved when Skogie’s at Gainesville Marina hosts the second annual LemonAID, a fund-raising event that helps members of Gold Star families make ends meet. The lakeside restaurant is offering an all-you-can-eat buffet on Memorial Day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the first drink free, for $20 per person.
“It’s one of our busiest days of the year so we hope that we can raise close to $20,000 this year,” said Tony Jonovitch, owner of Skogie’s. He said all funds (minus expenses) will go to the organization. “I’m the local Georgia representative for the national organization Believe With Me, that raises funds for these Gold Star families and what better way to help these families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom than to donate our sales from the day?”
The money from Believe With Me events that’s raised in Georgia stays in state. “We’ve helped save people’s homes and even a family farm,” he said. “This event will directly help these Gold Start families in many ways.”
The 11-hour event features the AYCE buffet, live music, silent and live auctions and plenty of Skogie’s signature food and beverages. Auction items range from a 4-day, 3-night stay in a mountain cabin to guitar lessons and many other products and services.
Jonovitch knows about the military. He served nine years in the U.S. Marines. “My wife Heather and I realized that we wanted to align Skogie’s with a meaningful and effective group that helps veterans, so we selected Believe With Me.”
Believe With Me hosts several events across the country each year. Memorial Day weekend, hundreds of children in dozens of states set up LemonAID stands to honor the families of fallen soldiers, raise awareness and funds for the organization. Believe With Me sponsors other events throughout the year, such as a Freedom 4-miler road race in Florida and projects around the holidays.
Sponsors for this year's LemonAID at Skogie’s are Suzanne Willis Properties, Syfan Logistics, Ignited Church of Lavonia, Lakeside News, Lance Animal Hospital, Turner, Wood and Smith, Gail Wilhite, Jason Sells Moore Team, Applied Images, GovX, Monica Crenshaw, Holly’s Bed and Breakfast, Instant Imprints and Yuengling.
Jonovitch is still seeking sponsors and auction or cash donations for the event. To participate, call him at 407 421-3468.
