Pirates Poker Run nets big winners: The kids

By Pamela A. Keene

The pirates of Lanier Charity Pokier Run netted big winners, from the competitors playing poker to the winner of a pair of Yamaha Wave Runners. But the real winners are the kids of Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the Edmonson-Telford Center.

“We raised close to $150,000 this year,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, organizers of the Poker Run. “There was so much excitement at the Casino Night and awards ceremony, and everyone had a great time. I’m always so impressed that everyone realizes the event is all about raising money for the kids, and it really makes a difference.”

Kevin Ryan of Buford won the pair of Yamaha Waverunners. He purchased 13 tickets online on July 4. “I guess 13 was his lucky number,” Geib said. “And all our winners this year are from Georgia.”

The Natural Hand Winners, those who submitted the cards they collected during the run, were Matt Arden of Loganville, first place; Tracy Hurd of Buford, second place; and Mark Beverwyk of Buford, third place.

Purchased Hand Winners, who bought extra hands at the Casino Night, were Jon Russell of Sandy Springs, first place; Gregg Dunn of Gainesville, second place; and Matt Wilson of Hiram, third place. “All but one of the cash winners donated their money back to our charity,” Geib said.

Winners of the AVC Stereo contest were Kim Chapman of Alpharetta, Supra SE550, first place; Ricky Lohr of Suwanee, Yeah Buoy, second place; and Rob Green, Centurion, third place.

Catherine Allen of Gainesville on the boat Lady of the Lake won Best Dressed Crew. Shane Treadwell of Cumming on FunShip won Best Decorated Boat. Earl Thompson of Lawrenceville on Irish Pearl won Best Overall.

The Pirates of Lanier Poker Run celebrated its 11th year this summer.
