Registration now open for July 20-22 charity Poker Run

By Pamela A. Keene

Lanier Partners is already getting ready for the 2017 Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run. Slated for July 20-22, the annual event raises money for Georgia children’s charities, including Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the Edmondson-Telford Center.

“This year’s event will have an even greater focus on families,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, which has produced the event since 2010. “We want to encourage more families – both local residents and out of towners – to participate. Registration is off to a good start already and we’re anticipating another successful event this summer.”

The format of the three-day event, presented by Reliable Heating and Air, remains basically the same as in previous years, with a few tweaks to make the festivities more accessible. The traditional participant “Meet and Greet” on Thursday night will take place at Coastal Breeze on Lanier Islands Parkway. Friday’s daytime event will take place with a raft-up in Cocktail Cove with a lunch and listen party, sponsored by AVC Marine.

“We’ve lined up a great event with a floating stage and food from Fish Tales and Pig Tales to bring back Cocktail Cove,” Geib said. “It’s just one of several new additions to the Poker Run that we’re introducing for 2017.”

The Friday night festivities will take place at the Lanier Islands amphitheater. Poker Run registrants and those with Land Lubber tickets can enjoy barbecue from Jim N Nick’s, silent and live auctions and musical entertainment by the ever-popular North Georgia Fly Betty Band. “Fly Betty is always a crowd-pleaser, plus with all the other activities, this will be a fun party on the eve of the Poker Run,” Geib said.

Saturday’s main event features an “open start” with participants beginning from anywhere on the lake. The six card stops will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except for the Gainesville Marina stop, which will close at 2 p.m. Four lunch stops are scheduled as well.

Participants can play their cards at the Casino Night party on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sunset Cove. Awards will be given at 9 p.m. followed by fireworks.
