Rent a boat, help the Lake Lanier Association

By Pamela A. Keene

Tom Stepnowski puts his money where his mouth is. That’s why he’s donating a portion of the proceeds from rentals at Lanier Boat Charter at Aqualand Marina to the Lake Lanier Association.

“I believe in giving back, and because we have the opportunity to be on this beautiful lake, what better way to support the work of the Lake Lanier Association than to give back part of the rental for each boat?” he said.

Stepnowski recently purchased the Fish Tales rental business from Dale Ozaki. Since then, he has added a vintage houseboat, six Harris tri-toon 24-foot boats, four jet skis, plus canoes, paddleboards and kayaks.

“We have partnered with Singleton Marine for the new boats in our fleet,” said the U.S. Coast Guard-certified 100-ton master. “We also offer packages with Fish Tales and Pig Tales with our charters.”

Stepnowski credits his wife Andrea as the catalyst for starting the charter business. “She knows how much I have always loved the water and has been very supportive of me,” he said. His daughter Madison, 19, and son Sean, 16, are also active in the business.

He has worked for more than 20 years in ethics compliance, providing code-of-conduct training and services for corporate America. He grew up boating in the Oyster Bay area of Long Island and has lived in Sarasota before coming to Atlanta two decades ago.

“I got involved with the Lake Lanier Association ‘organically,’ through Phil Bartoe, who works in real estate,” he said. “I have always been a trash-picker-upper when I’m around water and immediately realized that I wanted to support the organization.” He became a business sponsor.

“It was only natural to help support the work of the association,” he said. “We all need to be good stewards and advocates for the lake to keep it clean, safe and full.”
