Rico’s World Kitchen named ‘Best Diner in Georgia’

By Pamela A. Keene

The website Pure Wow has named Rico’s World Kitchen in Buford Georgia’s Best Diner. Opened several years ago in a converted gas station on the south end of Main Street, Rico’s serves food billed as “World Comfort Cuisine.”

Owner Rico Cunnington was surprised. “They didn’t notify us, and I found out about it when someone tagged me on Facebook about it,” he said. “I’m not really sure what the classification of a diner is, but it’s a good thing.”

Rico has worked in an around Lake Lanier for nearly two decades. He opened Rico’s World Kitchen about 10 years ago and The Brunch Apothecary two years ago in Dacula. Both specialize in hand-crafted made-from-scratch cuisine.

He began his restaurant career at Lanier Islands’ PineIsle Hotel (since demolished), working alongside his mom Nett who was a cook there for 22 years. “I told him ‘Don’t you ever be a cook, because it’s long hours,’ ” she said. “But I’m really impressed with the way he’s put everything together. He had the passion and he loves to please people. He doesn’t want people to leave hungry.”

In addition to a diverse menu, Rico’s serves hand-made specialty cakes that Nett creates. One of the most popular is the Avocado Cake that is made with fresh avocado. Cake selections change throughout the week.

Rico’s is famous for its food and its hospitality. “It’s because of our staff and my wife Katie that we’re successful,” he said. “I’m also really thankful for Nate Ogden, who’s been a friend of mine for many years. He’s retired now but he really helps me out.”

Ogden frequently sits in the front room at Rico’s. “He’s there almost more than I am, and several people have thought he was Rico,” Cunnington said. Rico’s recently hosted a fund-raising fish fry to help defray costs of Nate’s knee surgery. “People came out and really helped. Our servers even donated all their tips. It just meant so much to us that people came out to support him.”

Rico’s World Diner in Buford is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Brunch Apothecary in Dacula is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
