Snow Island returns to Lake Lanier

By Pamela A. Keene

It’s back and they say it is bigger than ever. License to Chill Snow Island returns to Margaritaville at Lanier Islands on November 22, bringing with it snow, winter fun and Santa. From a longer, faster, higher Parrot Mountain snow slide to holiday traditions including Magical Nights of Lights, Margaritaville becomes a winter wonderland this month.

“Parrot Mountain snow slide has been extended up by almost one-third,” said Bucky Perry, vice president of operations at Margaritaville. “It’s now 575 feet long and stands eight stories tall, giving riders an even more adventurous and invigorating ride than ever before. That’s almost two lengths of a football field.”

Guests travel to the top of Parrot Mountain via a conveyor-belt people mover to maximize their time on the ride. The ride finishes above the wave pool, which for winter has been converted to a snow-filled winter playland.

“Kids of all ages can enjoy making snowmen and playing in the snow,” Perry said. “Plus all the traditional holiday activities here will be in full swing from photos with Santa to ice skating on real ice, carnival rides and roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate by the fire pits along the beach.”
LandShark Bar & Grill is open all year.

Snow Island will include three retail areas for holiday shopping: Santa’s Workshop near Harbor Pavilion, Bucky’s, and a special area near LandShark Landing.

The island’s Magical Nights of Lights holiday lights, with seven miles of animated, sparkling displays, depicts Christmas traditions with “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” the “Tunnel of Light,” and “Santa and his Reindeer,” as well as newer island-themed lighted creations.

“Last year License to Chill Snow Island was very well received,” Perry said, “and we’re looking forward to an even better season this year.”

License to Chill Snow Island and Magical Nights of Lights open on Friday, November 22. Magical Nights of Lights continues through Sunday, January 5. License to Chill Snow Island will be open daily  through January 5, and then on Saturdays and Sundays through February 23. It will also be open on Monday, January 20, for the MLK holiday, and Monday, February 17, for Presidents’ Weekend.
