Swim Across America returns to Lanier Islands

By Pamela A. Keene

Swim Across America-Atlanta returns to Lanier Islands September 28 to raise money and awareness for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In preparation for the event, a practice session/open water clinic will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Lanier Islands. The cost is $40.

This year, more than 15 Olympians are expected to swim at  Lanier and sign autographs for the more than 600 swimmers that are expected for the event. Add to that 200-plus volunteers and another 250 or so spectators and this event has become one of the largest in the Swim Across America annual campaign.

In the past seven years, Swim Across America-Atlanta has raised more than $1.75 million. Registered swimmers are asked to raise money by first creating a fundraising page through the Participant Center on the website, which also includes tips and information about how to reach out to friends.

“Each year, we set our sights on a big fundraising goal, with the hope of creating an even bigger splash for cancer research,” said Alison Millsaps, SAA – Atlanta event director. “We ask each registered swimmer to commit to a fundraising minimum, but because of their passion for the cause, many of our swimmers more than surpass their numbers.”
