Youth charities net big returns from Pirates of Lanier Poker Run

By Pamela A. Keene

Three children’s charities are starting the holiday season with more jingle in their pockets, thanks to the generosity of Lanier Partners of North Georgia and the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run this past summer. Members of the group’s board of directors recently presented checks to the event’s designated charities for a grand total of $140,000.

Camp Sunshine received $70,000; Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County was awarded $40,000; and Naval Special Warfare Kids was given $30,000 at the recent check presentation held at Lake Lanier Islands Resort. The event’s major sponsor, Dan Jape of Reliable Heating and Air, made the presentations.

“We’re speechless. No words can express our gratitude,” said Chief Volunteer Officer/Board President Greg Katulka with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County. “We’re ecstatic to be a benefactor of the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run. This donation will go a long way to helping the young people in our community and the kids we serve.”

In return, representatives of the Boys & Girls Clubs presented Lanier Partners board members with copies of actor Denzel Washington’s book, “A Hand to Guide Me,” about his experiences as a youngster in Boys & Girls Clubs.

“You know, we’re just a bunch of guys who feel good about what we’ve been able to do for children’s charities,” said Rea Williams, outgoing president of Lanier Partners.

The 2013 event raised a total of $230,000.

Lanier Partners is already knee-deep in plans for the 2014 Pirates of Lanier Poker Run, scheduled for July 17-20. Reliable Heating and Air will again be the presenting sponsor.  “Our goal next year is $400,000,” said John Woodruff, incoming president of Lanier Partners. “We’re already accepting reservations and encourage people to register early before we reach our boat limit.”

The organization is offering 2013 promotional gear, including T-shirts, for sale on its website. Additionally, it has produced a DVD of the 2013 event.
